CTRMC’s 10th General Meeting – The Best Meeting Yet!

| March 25, 2015

The Cargo Tank Risk Management Committee (CTRMC) just concluded the industry’s 10th General Meeting to better protect ‘Workers on the Top of Tanks’ and effect positive changes to improve worker safety around cargo tanks. Over sixty industry stakeholders from across North America attended this week’s session. Approximately half of the participants were attending their first CTRMC meeting. In addition to having a large regional contingent present, several drivers were in attendance.

Some of the topics covered were …

  • Continued development of a hydraulically actuated cleanout valve (HACV). These devices would potentially replace manual caps on cleanout ports at the cargo tank ends.
  • “Line of Fire”, and how to mitigate risks in certain potentially dangerous processes.
  • New ideas for sampling the contents of liquid cargo tanks – from ground level – including aseptic devices.
  • The importance of accelerating the implementation of ‘balcony’ ladders in the cargo tank industry – especially, as outlined in the joint CTRMC / TTMA “Vision 2020” approach.
  • The enduring journey to eliminate cleanouts on new cargo tank trailers through improvements in spinners, cleaning agents, processes and other variables.
  • The perils of nitrogen rich atmospheres in the cargo tank industry – and what we can do to preclude future incidents.

Several of these presentations will be available in .pdf format in coming weeks at www.cargotanksafety.org .

We invite all industry stakeholders to review these materials and watch our website for an announcement of our 11th General Meeting in mid September 2015 in the Washington, DC area.
